New Music 20x12

New Music 20x12
You may remember way back in July 2010 we featured an article about a new music project to coincide with the 2012 Olympics. Delivered by PRS for Music Foundation, New Music 20x12 set out to commission 20 new original pieces of music which captured the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic Games which were no more that 12 minutes long (get it? 20x12!)
Leading artists from the worlds of classical, jazz and folk music were commissioned to create the 20 unique works which are all different in the stories they tell and the way they have been created. The works range from a new opera from Irish composer Conor Mitchell to Track to Track written by Graeme Fitkins for the Javelin Train which will take people from St Pancras to the Olympic Park.
The dates for the premieres have now been announced with each piece receiving at least three performances in the lead up to the Olympic games. The project culminates with a weekend at the Southbank Centre in London on the 13-15 July where all the works will be performed.
The performances will be all over the country with some pieces being performed spaces such as Trafalgar Square, with others happening as far and wide as Bridport Electric Palace in Dorset and The Tobermory Arts Centre on the Isle of Mull.
So no matter what your taste, whether its brass band or even beatboxing, New Music 20x12 has something to offer. Performances have already started, so make sure you check out the PRS for Music Foundation New Music 20x12 page for more information.
