Get Your Folk On! is a week of fabulous folk music making from the English Folk Dance and Song Society during the February half term. Held from Monday 13 to Friday 17 February from 10am to 4pm (5.30pm on Friday), the course is aimed at introducing young people to the world of folk music.
Anyone aged 11-18 is welcome, it doesn't matter if you're a complete beginner or an aspiring pro, as all levels of musical experience are catered for. Learning will be mainly by ear so there's no need to be able to read music. Help will also be on hand, so don't worry if you haven't done this before. The course will be led by EFDSS Associate Artist Laurel Swift, and a friendly team of expert folk musicians and tutors. With lots of things to do each day, everyone from newcomers to folk to dedicated enthusiasts will be able to get something from the week, which is funded by Youth Music.
Each day participants will be able to take part in a variety of activities including playing in folk ensembles, songwriting sessions and a Big Folk Band, involving everyone! There's also optional sessions including song, clog dance (clogs supplied!), and duo and trio playing. The week will culminate with an informal event where participants can share song and dance learnt and created during the course with their friends and family!
The course is priced at a very reasonable £35 and is held in Primrose Hill School and the EFDSS HQ at Cecil House in London. Don't worry if you can't get to the February course as Get Your Folk on! will be returning in weeks during the Summer and Autumn.
